Privacy Policy
Last Updated: August 12, 2026
CurioByte is made and run by one independent developer (the "I", "me", and "my" in this policy). I respect your privacy, and I believe in collecting only the data necessary to run your daily learning habit, and nothing more.
1. Information I Collect
a. Account Information
CurioByte accounts are created with Sign in with Apple. There is no password to pick and no sign-up form to fill in. All I keep to identify you is:
- A user ID (UUID) that identifies your account inside CurioByte.
- An email address, as passed to me by Apple. If you use Apple's Hide My Email, that is a private relay address Apple generates for CurioByte. I never see your real one, and the relay address is the only one I will ever hold.
- A display name, taken from the name Apple offers at sign-in. You can change it, or empty it, in your profile at any time.
b. Usage Data
To make the app work, I store:
- Your Interests: The categories you select (e.g., "Science", "Art").
- Your Collection: Which bytes you save, view, dismiss, or open from a link someone shared with you.
- Progress: Your history of daily learning.
c. Device Data
- Push notification tokens (only if you opt-in to reminders).
- Timezone (to deliver content at your preferred time).
- Your app language, so a notification arrives in the language you read the app in.
d. Payment Information
I never see or store your credit card details. All transactions are processed securely by Apple via the App Store.
e. Subscription Status
Your device checks with Apple whether you have an active CurioByte Premium subscription, and I store the answer as a single flag on your account: free or premium. That flag is what unlocks the full Collection, Listen, and your extra bytes. I do not receive or keep receipts, transaction identifiers, or anything else about the purchase. Apple keeps all of that.
f. What I Don't Collect
CurioByte has no analytics SDK, no advertising SDK, and no crash-reporting SDK. I do not track you across other apps or websites, and there is no third party watching you inside CurioByte.
2. How I Use Your Information
I use your data strictly to:
- Build Your Daily Three: Every day I publish one byte per category, the same Daily Edition for everyone, not a profile of you. Your chosen categories (three to six) decide which three reach you, and your history makes sure you are not shown a byte you have already seen.
- Sync Your Progress: Ensure your Collection and preferences are saved across devices.
- Send Reminders: Deliver the "Daily Byte" notification (only if enabled).
3. Where Your Data Lives
I rely on industry-leading infrastructure providers to keep your data safe:
- Supabase: My backend provider for secure database hosting and authentication. Your data is encrypted and stored on their secure servers.
- Apple: Sign in with Apple is how every CurioByte account is created. Apple verifies you and hands me a credential; if you chose "Hide My Email," that credential carries a private relay address instead of your own. Apple also processes every subscription and tells me only whether yours is active.
4. Features That Move Data Around
Listen
Every byte's narration is a single audio file I record in advance and store next to the byte, the same file for everyone. Tapping Listen downloads that file to your device and plays it. Nothing is generated from anything you write or say, the microphone is never used, and I do not record what you listened to or how far you got.
Sharing a byte
Sharing hands your phone's own share sheet a public link to that byte. The link carries the byte, not you: your identity is not attached to it, and I keep no record of who you sent it to. If the person who opens it has CurioByte installed and is signed in, the byte lands in their Collection as something shared with them, stored on their account, and without naming you.
The home-screen widget
The widget is a small separate program that iOS runs outside the app. To show today's byte it asks my servers for it directly (reading your user ID from your device's secure keychain) and downloads the poster image. It reads the same data the app does, and writes nothing back.
5. Your Rights
You are in control. You can:
- Edit Interests: Change your category preferences instantly in settings.
- Delete Account: You can fully delete your account and all associated data directly within the App settings. This action is irreversible.
- Opt-Out: You can disable push notifications at any time in your device settings.
6. Security
I implement modern security standards (SSL/TLS encryption, secure tokens) to protect your information. I never sell your personal data to advertisers or third parties.
